Today, data centers and IT labs face limited operational capacity; energy, cooling and space resource constraints; and increasing energy costs. What is needed is a set of solutions designed to mitigate these issues to pave the way for next-wave data centers and IT labs.
What do we mean by "next-wave"? Over the last few years there has been a lot of focus on overall data center efficiencies such as The Green Grid's power usage effectiveness (PUE), new methods for cooling such as air-side economizers and liquid cooled racks, and geographic options so new data centers can take advantage of plentiful power and natural cooling. All these measures are important but their primary focus is on the data center - how much power is consumed by support functions vs. IT computing power, where the data center is located, etc.
"Next-wave" data centers and IT labs also turn their attention to monitoring their IT equipment racks in ways, and at a level of detail, they have not done so before. In this webcast, Gartner analyst Dave Cappuccio and Raritan Power SBU director Herman Chan address a broad definition of data center infrastructure management (DCIM) at the rack and how deploying next-wave solutions can lead to optimal capacity planning, increased uptime, improved efficiency and productivity and decreased costs.
